Periscopic treatment is a relatively recent development in the treatment of gum disease. The periscope is a tiny oral camera specially designed to explore the pocket, or space, under the gum of teeth suffering from periodontal disease. A computer monitor is used to display a highly magnified image of the root surface of the diseased tooth. The periscope allows our dentists to view the contents of your periodontal pockets, and analyze the root surface of the tooth for disease-causing bacterial accumulations of plaque and calculus.
Our dentists will use the periscope to guide their cleanings of the root surface to remove the bacteria that fosters the development of periodontal disease. The periscope is also used to identify any other problems located under the gum that require treatment, such as cracks, perforations, and other flaws that may lead to disease.
Periscopic treatment can often replace surgery or other invasive treatments.
