Bruxism is a common dental problem that consists of the grinding of teeth and clenching of the jaw. Most people will suffer from this dental condition at some point in their lives. Bruxism usually occurs while asleep, but can also occur during the day. Bruxism can cause gum recession, facial pain, arthritis, and severe fractures or wearing in the teeth.
Chewing is a neuromuscular activity, and is highly controlled by the brain. When you are asleep, your subconscious process may become active while the higher (conscious) controls are inactive, causing bruxism or other sleep disorders. The most common symptoms of bruxism are earaches, headaches, and stress or tension in the muscles of your shoulders and neck. Bruxism is also connected to depression, eating disorders, anxiety, and chronic stress.
There are many treatment options available for bruxism. Depending on your needs our dentists may recommend that you be fitted for a mouth guard, an NTI-tss device (which limits muscle movement in the jaw), or even a Botox treatment. If bruxism has caused damage to your teeth or jaws, our dentists may recommend further restorative treatments.
